Perceptual Control Theory
PCT 2006!

Whether you're giving or receiving counseling, you'll learn something from this book about what works, how it works, and why it works. This book is a practicum from a gifted therapist who has studied the method of levels in depth and applied it in his work with great success.

The Method of Levels
How to do Psychotherapy Without Getting in the Way

Timothy A. Carey

“The method of levels is an experimental approach to counseling or psychotherapy. Its bases are Hierarchical Perceptual Control Theory and the naturalistic observation that a person's consciousness can apparently operate from different viewpoints within the brain's organization. The objective of this method is to draw a person's attention to perceptions at levels higher than perceptions in the primary or central focus of attention. When a level shift has occurred, the same process is repeated, and so on for as many times as possible or useful.”

from a workshop delivered at the
Control Systems Group's Annual Meeting,
—William T. Powers, July, 1999

“Perhaps one of the things I like most about PCT is that it is the only theory that enables a working model to be built that will function just the way a person does. With PCT I’ve consistently been able to find the answers to questions I was looking for, and I have been able to use the theory as a framework to develop questions I hadn’t thought of and to seek answers to them. PCT is the scientific foundation of everything in this book.”
