PLATO'S
DIALOGUES
- EUTHYPHRO, APOLOGY, CRITO
As Socrates enteres the court to defend himself against the charge of atheism, he meets Euthyphro, an expert on religious matters. Euthyphro believes that ethics should be based on religion. Socrates examines that belief. In the Apology, Socrates is on trial for his life. He uses this occasion to probe fundamental questions that all human beings face. Is it better to suffer injustice and die, or commit injustice and live? In Crito, Socrates discusses that choice and probes the foundations of civil and moral law, providing an answer as relevant to our time as to his.
"My friend, why do you, a citizen of the
great and mighty and wise city of Athens, care so much about acquiring
the largest amount of money and honor and reputation and so little about
wisdom, truth, and improvement of the soul, which you never think about
at all?"
